The Freshwater Trust (TFT) partners with IBM Research and SweetSense Inc in order to form a project with the main aim to monitor and track groundwater usage using Blockchain Technology. It also partners with the University of Colorado Boulder in order to get additional research support for the project. The project is funded by the Water Foundation and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
The scientists and engineers of the project will not only use the blockchain but also remote IoT sensors to measure groundwater usage. They will pilot the project in northern California’s Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta which is known as the “nexus of California’s statewide water system.” The blockchain will keep a record of all data exchanges or transactions and use smart contracts for automatic transactions. The water extraction data will be transmitted to the orbiting satellites and the IBM Blockchain Platform with the help of the sensors.
Farmers, Financers and Regulators can monitor and track the groundwater usage and demonstrate the sustainable pumping levels with the help of the trading of groundwater use shares. Those users who are in needs for groundwater amounts beyond their share cap can purchase groundwater shares from those users who require no all of their supply.
The Freshwater Trust (TFT) is known for multiple basin programs. 17 local agencies came together, formed into one integrated agency which is known as the Northern Delta Groundwater Sustainability Agency and started working on a unified plan in order to manage groundwater usage and TFT helped to form this agency. It helps these agencies to gather and analyze data along with the development of effective sustainability measures since they are understaffed. It has already developed a method in order to measure a surface water diversion and to address the unique qualities of the Northern Delta region. 148 surface water diversions covered over 29,000 farm acres in this region which include wine grapes, pears, corn, alfalfa, safflower, tomatoes, and wheat as of 2017, reported PR Newswire.
